Why Some Glasses Take Boiling Water and Others Crack
Two glasses that look identical can behave completely differently with a hot drink, and the difference is in the composition rather than the thickness.
Thermal Expansion
Glass expands when heated. If one part heats faster than another, the two parts pull against each other, and beyond a certain point the glass fractures.
That is thermal shock, and how resistant a glass is depends on how much it expands for a given temperature change.
The Two Types
- Soda-lime glass: the standard, cheap, expands more, less heat tolerant
- Borosilicate: contains boron, expands considerably less, tolerates heat
- Tempered soda-lime: strengthened, and it granulates rather than splintering
- Thin glass survives sudden heat better than thick, counter-intuitively
- Because thin walls equalise temperature faster
Manufacturers naming borosilicate rather than describing glass as heat-resistant, of the kind at vitever.net, are giving the specification that determines the behaviour.
Thick Is Not Safer
The point that surprises people. A heavy thick tumbler is more likely to crack with boiling water than a thin one.
Heat reaches the inner surface first; a thick wall means the outer surface is still cold while the inner has expanded. A thin wall equalises almost immediately.
Which is why traditional tea glasses are thin.
The Practical Precautions
Warm a glass with hot tap water before adding anything boiling.
Put a metal spoon in the glass, which conducts heat and reduces the local shock.
Pour slowly rather than all at once, and never onto one spot.
Do not set a hot glass on a cold or wet surface, and do not run cold water into a hot one.
The Freezer Direction
The same physics reversed. A glass taken from a freezer and filled with warm liquid is under the same stress.
Frozen glass should be brought toward room temperature before anything warm goes into it.
Dishwashers
Repeated cycles etch glass over time, producing permanent cloudiness that is not residue and cannot be removed.
Soft water and excess detergent accelerate it. Handwashing anything you care about avoids it entirely.
Check for Chips
A chipped or scratched glass is weaker and more likely to fail under thermal stress.
If One Breaks
Discard any food or drink nearby rather than picking through it. Fragments travel further than expected.
Read the Base
Most glassware states whether it is suitable for hot liquids.
